New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that became a focal point in his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core policy, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly after his triumph in November.

"This decision was based on the security of my family and the imperative to directing my full attention on enacting the affordability agenda voters voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community famous for its vibrant cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.

"Although my address will change there, Astoria will always live inside me and my work," he said.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

However his critics, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the affordable housing even though he came from a prominent family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a place for official events, and pushed for significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment far removed from his modest Astoria digs.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated consistent with the home's original era.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the price of rent exceeds the average income.

It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
