US Military Executes Deadly Attack in Pacific, Resulting in Four Fatalities
As stated by a high-ranking military spokesperson, the American armed forces carried out a lethal kinetic engagement on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, killing four individuals.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a deadly attack on a vessel linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along a established drug smuggling route and was involved in illicit drug transport. A total of four male narco-terrorists were eliminated, and no American forces were injured.”
Background and Recent Actions
This announcement follows a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, pledging to escalate the military presence.
Just on the previous day, US defense officials said it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 strikes have killed at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Justifies Tactics Amidst Scrutiny
The administration has faced growing demands to make public video of a September 2nd vessel attack. But, officials have refused to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a success, arguing it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the bounds of legal military action.
Although the administration has stated the operation is about halting drugs destined for the US, remarks from a senior aide seemed to suggest a broader geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the senior advisor said the leader “wants to keep on destroying vessels until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”
This suggests the series of strikes may be linked to a push to oust Venezuela's current leadership.
