The people of Israel mark two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations continue
Israelis have assembled throughout the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The attack saw more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our violent adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still were held around the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the affected families, it was televised on Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected throughout the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas representatives met in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a second day of mediated discussions to review the terms of the proposal.
A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the discussions said that an night meeting of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt.
The representative explained the earlier meeting finished without concrete outcomes, amid conflicting views over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the deal.
He noted that the discussions are "challenging and have not yet produce any major advancement," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to reduce the disparities between the two sides.
Critical Issues in Discussions
- An enduring truce
- The trade of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid provision
- Post-war management of the area
Civilian Feeling
In the city's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member lived through the assault on the outdoor event, where hundreds were killed and numerous more were abducted by Hamas militants - explained: "Nowhere seems like home now and until all the hostages come back not a single person will have peace of mind."
"After we see everyone home again, we can relax anew. Then we can commence heal," she added.
Outside the prime minister's home in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel says 48 stay in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be living.
Demonstrator one woman explained: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to return. But we sincerely need promises that we will be safe."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that about 70% of Israeli citizens prefer the conflict to end in as payment for the liberation of the hostages.
Gaza Circumstances
At the location of the gathering, those paying respects gathered to pay their respects.
From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and artillery could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli attacks persisted.
In Gaza City, bombardments were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone districts and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"Once the dusk comes, the dread arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike last year, described.
"My family are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are lying together, clinging, particularly my smallest child who places his head on me all night."
"Every second we check the reports to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had taken in the corpses of several people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of the city said two more fatalities had been transported. An individual was died by Israeli troops while attempting to get help to the southern area, medical staff reported.
