Vicky McClure are set to reprise their characters in the acclaimed crime series

The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode series written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but official word only arrived this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat corruption within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to become a offender.

However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers watch the developments of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the moment there were no plans for further series.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
