The A$150 Million Men Transforming a Human Highlight Reel
The National Basketball Association campaign tips off now, marking the first time in a ten years that Australia's pair of biggest hoops names – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are teamless.
Their absence indicates a transition period, as Australian backcourt duo Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels step up as essential players for contending teams, with recently signed nine-figure contracts making them some of the country's highest sporting earners.
But they are not alone. Fourteen Australians are expected to play for minutes around the league, including veteran centres Jock Landale and Duop Reath, emerging wings in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to promising rookies like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
Josh Giddey Out to Prove Himself
Following protracted discussions with the Bulls, the guard ultimately inked his rookie extension worth $100m (A$153 million) over four years last month. It's a major deal for the Melbourne native, but in league standards it is cheap for Giddey’s position and profile as a primary ball-handler. The reluctance for Chicago’s front office to offer a max deal means the young star begins this year with much to prove.
Having been traded by Oklahoma City at the start of last season, Giddey watched as his old team charged to the title without him. As the Bulls aim to reach the postseason in the less competitive Eastern Conference, he will have to demonstrate his scoring and defensive skills are starter-worthy or else he may slide towards the league's outskirts.
Dyson Daniels Eyes Another Step
The guard signed the identical contract as Giddey recently, and after his MIP honor last season, the Atlanta guard’s trajectory has skyrocketed in Atlanta following his departure from the Pelicans. He is now lauded as one of the NBA's best defensive specialists, and topped the league in steals with three per game – more than one full takeaway per match greater than the total of the runner-up.
Playing next to flamboyant Trae Young in the Hawks, the 22-year-old can be effective this campaign as a playmaking option and defensive stopper as long as the team advance to the postseason. But if he can elevate his three-point shooting, which was subpar last season, and keep develop his distribution and driving, he could become one of the league’s most well-rounded players.
Johnny Furphy On Highlight Watch
Indiana wing the rookie has emerged as a crowd favorite in Indiana following a series of spectacular slam dunks in pre-season. His acrobatics prompted league figure Pat Beverley to label him as the “top Caucasian leaper we’ve seen in a while”, and an opportunity to the All-Star slam dunk competition could be on the table.
Following logging just eight minutes per game over 50 games in his debut season, the former college student is in contention for a Indiana rotation that might favor young players following setback to lead guard Tyrese Haliburton.
Tyrese Proctor An Outside Shot
Guard the Sydney native dropped in the June draft down to the 49th pick, where playoff hopefuls the Cavaliers selected him. The Cavs are favourites to reach the NBA finals from the Eastern Conference, so it would be rare for a rookie taken in the late picks to see much playing minutes. But the Sydney product has earned time in pre-season, and his pro-level shooting gives him a chance to make an impact.
Minutes Crunch Ahead for Veteran Quintet
Veteran centre Jock Landale has a opportunity to claim the starting five spot in Memphis given highly-touted Zach Edey will be out for the opening of the campaign after a surgical procedure.
In the Trail Blazers, Duop Reath is the experienced reserve to youthful big men Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could play regular minutes if the Blazers become in the hunt. His fellow player Matisse Thybulle is expected to be used as a defensive spark in a reserve role.
In Charlotte, Josh Green’s summer shoulder surgery has resulted in him with no return date to come back. The player still has a contract for next season, but will not want to give his colleagues at the developing Charlotte an excessive advantage. And injury has already hindered Dante Exum, who has a knee complaint and has missed key pre-season chances in Dallas.
Australian NBA Players On the Fringe
Additionally, there are those who are unlikely to see much, if any, game action this season. Thirty-eight-year-old Joe Ingles is back in Minnesota, but appears to be little more than a mentor ensuring Anthony Edwards focused.
Rookie Rocco Zikarsky is expected to be developed by the Wolves through their affiliate team. Other rookies Lachlan Olbrich in Chicago and Alex Toohey for the Warriors are also in the development pipeline, while the experienced Luke Travers will be hoping to win playing time with Proctor for the Cavs.
Ben Simmons and Patty Mills Fish for a Deal
If there were any doubts Patty Mills was set to retire, he answered them with a workout video shared on his social media over the weekend, showing the veteran remains sharp and determined on landing another league deal.
Simmons' intentions is anyone’s guess after an off-season in Australia, angling and playing with a Sherrin. Although he posted on social media recently to deny suggestions he was retired, the former All-Star – an All Star as recently as 2021 – has not yet surface.
