Rory McIlroy celebrates Sports Personality victory with double accolades.

Seconds before the announcement, a nervous idea raced through Rory McIlroy's mind. He admitted he was hoping, "Please don't let it be a racing champion again."

"Tonight represents a fantastic night for golf," McIlroy declared. "Our game was recognized in such a big way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a big night for golf, and hopefully we can use that."

On this occasion, however, there was no late twist. The outcome was decisive, allowing a thrilled McIlroy to reflect on a standout evening for both himself and the team winners, who were honored as the year's best team.

A Whirlwind Schedule

Choosing not to stay for the aftershow party, McIlroy was already plotting his next sporting adventure. Having just played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and flown to the UK, he was returning immediately to the sunshine state.

"The last 24 hours have been a whirlwind 24 hours," he said. "My plan is for a little bit of rest over Christmas."

Unfinished Business

However, McIlroy made clear he has no desire to rest on his laurels, notwithstanding securing the career grand slam earlier in the year. "I am confident I've got a few good years in me," he asserted.

"Further big titles, season-long rankings, team competitions, that's the target. But as long as you feel like you can keep progressing and have the drive, that's the essential part."

Squad Celebration

Meanwhile, Ryder Cup partner Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the squad honor, also lauded golf's remarkable night and his great friend's personal achievement.

"They are the memories that will live with us for all time so to get the fan's acknowledgment for that is truly special," he commented. "Witnessing it Rory pick that up, I think he deserves it so much."

After it was noted that McIlroy was only the third in his sport to win the award in its seven-decade run, Fleetwood smiled before joking, "Golfers aren't top of the list are we!"

Next Targets

His goal is to finally win his first major next year but he acknowledged McIlroy still desires more success. "Provided that you want to be the ultimate competitor, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to enhance," he noted.

United Hopes

Before McIlroy left, one final question was raised. A devoted Manchester United fan, he has been invited to show his trophies at Old Trafford before. So could he be tempted to do it again after his latest triumphs?

"If they halt the flow of four goals at home," McIlroy responded with a grin. "Improvements are being made. There's a little bit of positivity around."

Following a 2025 for the ages, it's understandable that he is seeing the upside.
