A couple of months subsequent to being handed a twenty-seven-year sentence for trying to “destroy” the nation's democratic institutions, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro now appears destined for incarceration.

Expected Jailing

The adjudicated plotter – who had been subject to residential detention in his estate while a number of court processes and challenges play out – is broadly anticipated to be imprisoned in the next few days, amidst increasing talk that he will be moved to a notorious top-security prison.

Previous Statements on Inmates

But the possibility of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, several of whom this week inspected the prison in an obvious bid to discourage the judiciary from sending him there.

Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, stated he expected the 70-year-old politician to be jailed in the next 10 days and worried his location could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s severe gut issues – the result of a near-fatal knife attack during the 2018 presidential campaign – meant it would be risky to keep the ex-leader there. “His health is highly critical. He will not be able to cope if they take him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” said the senator, who also voiced anxiety about cramped cells and the condition of inmate food.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered seeing cells holding 40 prisoners: “That’s almost one square metre per detainee.

“We spoke to the inmates and they grumble, naturally, of the awful meals,” continued the senator.

Allies React

Lucas is not the lone figure speaking out prior to the ex-leader's predicted incarceration.

Penning in a prominent daily, one more backer, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” public service and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the largest wrong in its past”.

“This is an unfairness that gnaws the spirits of many people in Brazil,” the former minister said.

Varied Public Response

It is possibly correct given the considerable backing Bolsonaro maintains on the right-wing. But his anticipated imprisonment has also pleased the spirits of numerous other people who think he should be incarcerated for plotting to stop the elected leader from taking power – and additionally scheming to have him killed.

He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years applauding the severe handling of convicts, had unexpectedly woken up to their privileges. “Recently has the extreme right – which has consistently claimed that civil liberties were not for lawbreakers – chosen to inspect a penitentiary to learn what conditions are actually like,” he said.

“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “shameful, insulting conduct”.

Possible Prison Environment

Regardless of talk that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which now contains about fourteen thousand prisoners, his expected destination seems to be a nearby penitentiary for law enforcement and other “unique” inmates known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

Its cells are much more comfortable than those in the primary facility, although nevertheless a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the stunning leader's home, about 12 miles away.

Based on reports, the cell Bolsonaro could expect to inhabit in Papudinha measures about 260 square feet – roughly the area of two parking spaces – and contains a 130 square foot restroom with a water facility and a 12 sq metre balcony. “He could be allowed to have a TV and also a cooler in his room as long as they were donated by his loved ones,” information indicated.
