Preparations for Putin-Trump Talks Postponed Days After Hungarian Capital Talks Proposed
Currently exist "no plans" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has stated.
Recently Trump stated he and the Russian president would meet in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to address the war in Ukraine.
A initial discussion between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "productive" call and that a meeting was no longer "required".
The White House declined to provide additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.
Previous Developments
The US president had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a day before hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.
Various sources indicated his meeting with Zelensky had been a "heated exchange", with sources indicating the president had urged him to cede large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Russia.
Yet, on Monday the American president embraced a truce plan backed by Ukraine and EU officials to pause the war on the present positions.
"Freeze the lines the way it is," he stated.
Russia has frequently resisted against pausing the present battle positions.
The Russian government was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Lavrov said on Tuesday, implying that halting hostilities would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.
Diplomatic Positions
The "root causes" of the war needed to be addressed, Lavrov said, using Kremlin shorthand for a set of comprehensive conditions that include the acceptance of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a non-starter for Kyiv and its EU supporters.
Zelensky stated discussions about the battle positions were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to prevent dialogue.
He also said the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the delivery of long-range weapons to Ukraine.
Military Considerations
Putin's spontaneous discussion with the US leader recently came ahead of rumors that the US was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could potentially strike inside Russia.
The Ukrainian leader stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had forced Russia to participate in talks. The conversation concerning the missiles had emerged as a "strong investment" in negotiations", he remarked.
