Italian Watchdog Criticizes Lift Ticket Cost Increases as Completely Unjustified
A leading Italian consumer association are sounding the alarm over what they describe as completely unjustified cost hikes for ski passes this winter season, warning that alpine sports could become a luxury reserved for affluent individuals.
Substantial Price Increases Across Italy
Across the Alpine regions and breathtaking Dolomites in the northern territories to the slopes of central Italy, prices are poised to increase by as much as 40% compared to 2021 levels, according to fresh research.
The popular Dolomiti Superski ticket, which grants access to all 12 resorts in the premium Dolomite area, will now cost skiers €86 per day this season. In the popular Abruzzo resort, a single-day lift ticket is projected to hit €60, following substantial visitor surges last season.
Seasonal Pass Costs and Additional Expenses
At the same time, annual skiing tickets will vary between €755 per adult in Roccaraso to as much as €1,800 in the Aosta valley.
The cost of renting winter sports gear has also increased, along with hotel accommodations and dining expenses throughout mountain resorts.
Consumer Group President Points to Unreasonable Hikes
Gabriele Melluso, leading the consumer protection group, stated that the cost rises—attributed by resorts to increased utility expenses, resort maintenance, and requests for superior gear—were entirely unreasonable and unacceptable.
"Both because inflation in Italy are managed effectively and energy tariffs, which had increased expenses for mountain facility managers in 2022, have returned to normal," he explained.
The president further stated that prices have now reached levels where less wealthy individuals are being forced to abandon their traditional settimana bianca, or ski holiday, completely.
Tourism Decline and Wider Perspective
Melluso observed a sharp decline in alpine visitors during the current winter period, with a million fewer domestic visitors visiting ski resorts compared to the previous year due to increasing expenses.
Despite these increases, Italy remains a more affordable destination for winter sports fans in the European region compared to nearby Swiss resorts, French destinations, and Austria.
Olympic Context
The increasing worry over winter sports expenses comes as the country prepares to host the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics between February 6 and 22. Italy's foreign minister, the foreign affairs official, announced on Friday that Italy had presented a plan to the United Nations calling for a "worldwide ceasefire" during the international event.
"With Milan Cortina we must also send a message of peace and dialogue... to stop warfare during the Olympics," Tajani emphasized.
