Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
No fewer than 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.
The victims are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the victims who are known so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She described the events leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
