I thought I edged it - Carey on review reprieve.

Australia gloveman Alex Carey stated he thought he had edged the ball when he was given not out on Decision Review System during day one of the 3rd Ashes series Test versus the English.

After surviving on 72, Carey went on to make a fine 106 to help the hosts finish on 326-8 at the stumps in the Adelaide Oval.

What happened?

Australia were 245-6 when Carey attempted a cut shot to seamer Josh Tongue.

The England team were convinced they had a wicket, believing they had detected an nick, but umpire Ahsan Raza was unmoved.

After skipper Ben Stokes opted to review the on-field call, the technology reviewed by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney displayed a spike however this came prior to the ball had reached the bat.

Gaffaney added he was of the opinion there was a clearance between the bat and the ball.

Therefore, Carey was given not out.

"I thought there was a feather or some sort of noise when it passed the bat," commented Carey.

"Had I been given out, I likely would have reviewed, but without much conviction. It was a nice sound as it passed the bat."

Controversial 'Snicko'

There has been debate about 'Snicko'' throughout the Ashes contest after a several dubious moments.

England's bowling coach David Saker suggested England may pursue this latest incident to a higher level with match referee Jeff Crowe.

"We haven't acted yet, but following today's events, that could change," Saker said.

"We've had doubts about it throughout. It's disappointing that this is a post-play discussion. That's where we are."

Personal Milestone

The ton was his first in Ashes cricket.

It was also an emotional moment for Carey, whose dad passed away in September. Carey's wife was emotional in the crowd as the batsman marked the occasion by pointing to the heavens.

"Scoring a century at home with family watching was incredible," stated Carey.

"I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. I'm trying not to tear up. It was truly wonderful."

Not New to Furore

Carey is not new to Ashes controversy.

He was the keeper who famously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in the 2023 Ashes series, resulting in a heated final day.

On his reprieve he added: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. That's how the game works; fortune plays a part."

"Maybe it went my way."
