Sir Gareth Southgate has stated that he is not seeking a re-entry into football management, pointing out that it would be tough to match the special mission he experienced as the national team coach.

The former coach suggested his intention to dedicate his efforts toward engaging the next generation and countering what he labeled a pervasive negative narrative currently existing in the country.

Pursuing New Avenues Beyond The Sport

In a recent radio interview, the manager was questioned on rumors linking him with vacant management roles in the top flight and other leagues.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he responded. “Recreating that unique role won’t be easy. With 37 years in football behind me, I’m excited to identify fresh ways to create impact.”

A Passion for Role Models

Leading up to the publication of his upcoming book, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, he emphasized that he is deeply committed about setting examples for young people, applying experiences from his period as England’s men’s football manager from 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

The leader feels that his experience managing the squad, during which the team shifted from being widely disliked to broadly loved, holds general lessons.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he said. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Family Life and Shaping the Next Generation

Reflecting on his role as a parent, the coach observed: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He continued: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Common Ground Above Discord

Southgate stressed that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the public discourse often highlights disagreement.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he said. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

Southgate’s upcoming publication, the book Dear England, is set to provide further insights on guidance and country pride based on his notable career.
